Have you ever heard a song and tried to directly learn how to play it just by listening to it? It might seem very difficult at first, but it is definitely possible and it becomes more and more natural as you learn how to do it.
I focus on teaching this skill, and the music theory that is behind it, by working upon songs chosen by the students. It is a great way of getting to learn a specific instrument as well as the structuring concepts that are key to music in general.
If you already know the basics of musical theory, that's great. I will adapt the content and structure of the class according to your level and your interests. We can then talk more in-depth about all different kinds of chords (focusing on four-note chords and extensions), scales and modes, why they are like they are and understand how each of these trigger particular emotional responses when we listen to them.
Independently of your level, you will also be able to create and write your own songs as well as to engage in musical improvisations.
In my classes, reading and writing are centered on chord notation, although classical notation is also addressed.
The students are expected to have their own guitar (classical, acoustic or electric). I will have my own classical guitar.
I have been playing music for around 20 years. I started out with piano lessons as a kid and then learned guitar throughout my adolescence. Although I have had basic formation in classical music, in a conservatory, most of my learning was through private lessons, where I was free to learn the kind of music that interested me personally. In between the classes, I also dedicated myself to learn independently, exploring the instruments and learning online with Youtube and Cifra Club. I then moved onto a Jazz school, where I had four years of more theoretically-based training.
Throughout the years I have played rock, blues, jazz, classical, metal, bossa-nova and a bit of flamenco and hip-hop. This diversity is on the basis of my strong relationship with music and is very helpful for me to adapt to all kinds of interests from the students.
I have had my own alternative rock band (we even won a band contest) and I have performed many times solo in bars and cafés, with guitar and voice. Apart from this, I work on certain isolated experimental music projects.
