A propos de Maria
Native speaker of English working as an English language teaching assistant at a business school for young adults.
My role involves preparing students to take the Cambridge First Certificate and Cambridge Business English exams.
I have a first class degree in French and German from the University of Edinburgh and recently completed a TEFL qualification to teach English and Business English.
I have been giving tutoring classes for a number of years to students with various language levels and have helped them achieve their personal goals - from improving conversational, practical English to passing specific English certifications.

My 1-1 lessons are flexible and planned around the learner - we can discuss which skills you feel most and least confident about in the initial session. From here I will develop a tailored teaching plan, which will cover reading, listening, speaking and writing skills, as well as grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation practice.
My teaching style is professional and structured but also relatively relaxed in order to create an environment where students can feel at ease speaking. It’s important not to be afraid to make mistakes or ask questions, as I will always give feedback at the end which is constructive and focused on individual students’ abilities. I am also happy to provide further materials to be done as homework, to build on what we cover in the tutoring lessons.
I will usually start the session with a five minute warm-up chat, to practice using everyday language, as well as recap points covered in previous sessions.
1-1 practice with a native speaker can lead to a huge improvement in listening and speaking skills, particularly when it comes to pronunciation.
Oral exams may seem daunting, but the key to doing well here is simply regular practice of speaking and answering spontaneous, unprepared questions. I can help you by sharing some go-to phrases for when you’re stuck, as well as practicing questions on themes that you’re very likely to be asked about.
