À propos d'Israel

I'm IRUE, a first-class student in computer science, having a good knowledge and experience in maths, English, and algebra. SECRETS TO ACHIEVING A PERFECT CGPA

I promised some people in my DMs that I’d share the study tips that helped me achieve a perfect CGPA. Before I dive in, let me clarify: these tips are tailored to my journey. The key is understanding yourself and adapting what works for you. If you can pick even one or two lessons here, you’re already on the path to academic growth!

1. Find Your Drive and Purpose

Academic excellence starts from the mind. I’ve seen people experience a mindset shift that completely transformed their approach to academics.
For me, my motivation was simple: I grew up in Mushin, where academic success stories were rare. But a year before I gained admission into UNILAG, someone from my community, Bosun Roy Layinde, graduated as the Overall Best Graduating Student. That moment planted a seed in me: if he could achieve it, why couldn’t I?
This belief allowed me to “lock in” during my first year, knowing that excellence was achievable regardless of my background.

2. Set Clear Goals

Once I decided to aim for excellence, I set a specific goal: a perfect 5.00 CGPA.
To achieve this, I worked semester by semester. At the start of each semester, I created an "End-of-Semester Gradesheet" where I listed all courses, my target scores, and corresponding grades. I also prayed deeply over it, committing both my efforts and results to God.

3. Create a Study Timetable

Your study schedule should reflect your strengths.
I’m not an overnight reader, so I structured my timetable to focus on studying during the day. In my first two years, I covered one topic per day, but as responsibilities increased, I adjusted while maintaining daily goals. The important thing is having a clear and achievable plan.

4. Gather All Study Materials Early

At the beginning of every semester, I created a desktop folder for all my courses.
I reached out to seniors for materials, downloaded textbooks, and gathered past questions (with answers if available). The Faculty Library was also a backup.
I never started reading until I had everything I needed. Being stranded mid-study disrupts your flow—preparation is key.

5. Develop a Reading Pattern

I used a three-stage approach:

Scanning Stage: I skimmed through all materials, highlighting key points and transferring them to a jotter.

Deep Reading Stage: I studied each topic thoroughly, using textbooks and online resources to supplement my knowledge. After studying a topic, I solved past questions from the last 5–10 years to test my understanding. Any new insights were added to my notes.

Review Stage: Close to exams, I focused mainly on my condensed notes and solved past questions again to reinforce my understanding.

6. Leverage External Resources

I’m a visual learner, so I used YouTube videos to break down abstract concepts, especially in molecular biology.
By my third year, I also started using platforms like ChatGPT to simplify difficult concepts or guide my study sessions.
These tools made complex courses much easier to understand.

7. Take Breaks

I can’t study for long stretches.
Instead, I read for 20–30 minutes, then took a 10–15-minute break.
Sometimes I’d take a walk, play a game (yes, I’m a gamer), or nap. This helped me stay refreshed and avoid burnout.
On exam days, I studied for longer hours but always made sure to take plenty of breaks.

8. Practice Active Recall

In your free time, test yourself on what you’ve studied.
See how much you can remember without looking at your notes.
This strengthens your memory and quickly shows you areas that need more work.

9. Attend Classes

This might seem basic, but it’s crucial.
Attending classes helped me understand my lecturers’ expectations and sometimes predict potential exam questions.
Pay attention to how lecturers emphasize certain topics—you'll thank yourself later.

10. Choose the Right Study Environment

During early studying, I could read anywhere: classrooms, hostels, or the library.
But for deep study and revision, I always chose a distraction-free environment.
I also preferred low-light settings because they helped me focus better.

11. Back Everything with Prayers

Finally, I believe that strength beyond your own is essential.
I prayed consistently for wisdom, strength, and focus.
In my experience, faith and hard work go hand in hand.

Remember: the journey to academic success is personal.
Define your goals, understand your unique strengths, and stay consistent.
What’s your top study tip? Let’s learn from each other!

This is my best rate as lessons are prepaid. It keeps admin simple for both of us.
